Jens S Super Reviewer. Jun 03, Goddamn, it's been almost 9 months since I've had Amazon Prime but, finally, we are back together again my sweet.

Prime, in my opinion, has bigger movies available quicker than Netflix does. That's not to shit on Netflix, because I love Netflix more than I love my own life, but it's an observation I've made.

Having said that, why is my first movie back on Prime Baywatch? Honestly, I don't even know. Neither here nor there, I suppose. I guess I just wanted something not as serious.

With that said, however, let's talk about Dwayne The Rock Johnson and his track record. To say that the man is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, box office draw in the world is not an understatement.

He is a man that, just by his presence alone, he raises a film's exposure exponentially. Rampage, while based on a video game, isn't super popular in today's gaming landscape.

So, to me, the film's success can be attributed to his star power. But, really, even the mightiest of box office draws have their 'failures' at the movies.

I guess the failure comes in the expectation that this movie would make much more money than it did, given the strength of The Rock's ability to bring in the people.

And, of course, this film was fairly savaged by critics. Some people would even say that this was the worst movie of Which brings us to what I thought about this.

Of course, this was never gonna meant to be a contender for any serious film awards. And there's nothing wrong with that, of course, not everything has to be Oscar-caliber.

But, in my opinion, there's nothing terrible about this movie, in the slightest. I've seen some really bad movies lately and Baywatch isn't close to being one of them.

It's not even fucking close. I can name four movies, right off the top of my head, that were considerably worse than this: Wrecker last movie I reviewed , Family Blood, Temple and The Emoji Movie.

And I can name others, but I would be here a while and I don't wanna waste my time and yours, esteemd reader. The Razzie nominations, in my opinion, weren't necessarily fair because the Razzies are always gonna lean towards higher profile movies to award their nominations to.

They're not gonna give a nomination to Family Blood for worst movie, since barely anybody knows of that film's existence.

And, maybe, they really did think this was a terrible movie but, again, if you're gonna 'celebrate' terrible movies, be fair about it and include movies that were terrible that people might not know about.

Also Zac Efron got a nom for wost actor? I mean, really??? Say what you will about Efron, but he's a fairly good comedic actor. I mean that legitimately.

Look at his work in Neighbors and its sequel and get back to me. He's got some comedic chops and, really, the best thing about this movie really is the cast and their chemistry.

With that said, however, you might think that I'm defending this movie because I thought it was good. Well, actually, you would be wrong about that.

I'd say that this was a perfectly decent movie, nothing more and nothing less.

With that said, however, you might think that I'm defending this movie because I thought it was good. Well, actually, you would be wrong about that.

I'd say that this was a perfectly decent movie, nothing more and nothing less. I suppose the concept that I've seen worse movies recently is not a good one, since it doesn't actually explain why I thought this was a slightly better than below average movie.

I think why this movie 'falls' apart is because it's way too self-aware of its own absurdity. Efron's character even references this in a line in this movie.

This is aware of how absurd it is that lifeguards are investigating murders that might be connected to one larger conspiracy involving buying real estate through the threat of a deadly drug.

And, honestly, that self-awareness is problematic. The original Baywatch was a complete campy cheesefest. I feel that the writing crew knew this, of course, but they never once let it come across on their scripts.

These episodes were filmed in earnest, so the fact that it was incredibly campy is part of its charm.

Full House is another 90s cheesefest but, again, its camp and corniness is more entertaining as a result of the fact that they're oblivious to it.

Try to do Full House today, but everyone is aware that they're in a 90s sitcom and they poke fun at its cliched stories. It just wouldn't work, it would not work at all.

And you could definitely say that about this movie. They poke fun at the absurdity of the show's concept, about how every hot female lifeguard seems to run in slo-mo, among many others.

Another problem is that there's some more 'serious' moments here. Like Brody going through some sort of mental breakdown as a result of his failures at the Olympics and his failure to fit in within the lifeguards' team structure, also how Thorpe made Brody Lieutenant by firing Mitch for overstepping his 'legal' boundaries.

The rest of the group reacts as if Brody didn't really fight for Mitch and, really, while that's true, he was also very apprehensive and he didn't even want the job.

It was either that or Thorpe sent him to jail Brody was sent to Baywatch for community service on a plea deal for a drug bust or something.

So for the team to treat him like sort of pariah didn't really make sense. I don't think a Baywatch movie, in the year it was released , should worry about having any sort of more serious moments.

Also, one other thing, there's also no real reason why this movie should have been close to two hours. The cast is fun and they make the movie far more watchable than it probably would have been without them but, let's be honest, there's not enough material here to justify its length.

This might have even received a higher rating if it was maybe 95 minutes long. You keep the pacing tighter, the 'action' moves quicker and there's not a lot of dead air, which you could definitely argue there is here.

For example, the morgue scene goes on way too long. As far as raunchy comedies go, this one is definitely a little on the tamer side. I do understand the criticism of the humor being a little crude, in that I feel that it's a little too simplistic.

Because, to me, outside of Brody's character checking a dead guy's taint, there's no real raunchiness to be had here. There's also Ronnie getting his dick stuck in a wooden beach chair.

But, to be honest, that's about it. Or that's all that I can remember, at the very least. There's probably more, but I just forgot about it.

And I feel that that's this movie's biggest contribution. I've seen bad movies, but this is not one of them. I've seen plenty of decent but, ultimately, very forgettable movies and this is definitely one of them.

Some might think this was the worst movie of the year, but those people clearly haven't seen The Emoji Movie. Holy fucking shit, talk about a terrible movie.

Still, I wouldn't recommend this, since it falls short of being a good movie, but I had no problem sitting through this. I know that's not exactly a glowing recommendation, but for a self-aware Baywatch, that's really the best thing that you can say.

Jesse O Super Reviewer. Apr 16, Based on the hit '90s television series, Baywatch is a big-budget action comedy that falls flat. There are many differences between being a lifeguard and being a PI.

Lifeguards run on sand. PIs run on everything. I realized that as I chased after a boardwalk con man we've been staking out all day.

You know, John Lennon once said I didn't plan on meeting a beautiful woman during a fistfight. The difference between being a lifeguard and a private eye is that a lifeguard has to spot trouble and respond.

Private eye gets hired by someone who's already in trouble. Either way, a stranger's life is suddenly in your hands.

Unfortunately, private eyes can't always spot the victims as easily as lifeguards. After the first season of Nights was shown to have poor ratings, it was retooled for season two as a science-fiction inspired show, similar to The X-Files.

Gregory-Alan Williams and the character of Garner Ellerbee left the series, replaced by the character of Daimont Teague played by Dorian Gregory , a mysterious paranormal expert.

Mitch's detective career seemed to take a supernatural turn in One day, while on duty as a lifeguard, Mitch pulled a woman out of the water in what at first appeared to be a routine save.

Speaking in Malay , she spoke of a creature that every culture has had in its mythology: "a legendary creature that is the embodiment of all evil," according to Mitch's associate, paranormal expert Daimont Teague.

Believing the woman to have survived a recent shipwreck known as the "Argo Zed," Mitch chartered a boat and dove to the location of the shipwreck.

Mitch and his fellow diver, Griff, found a body near the shipwreck and decided to go further into the massive ship.

In the ship's boiler room they found an air pocket but were attacked by what Teague believed to be "The Ajogun," a mythical creature believed to inhabit the Purari River.

After fighting and defeating the creature which Mitch and Griff could not identify , they continued through the ship, finding another air pocket that contained sleeping children, who had miraculously survived the shipwreck.

Escaping through the bilge , the children were safely brought to the surface. Even after this encounter, Mitch told Teague that he still didn't believe in the paranormal, but could not deny that something unusual was there.

The storylines of Baywatch Nights grew increasingly more bizarre as the series progressed in season 2. Mitch faced many strange and terrifying things that season.

Among them were things such as voodoo cults, ancient Vikings , vampires , extra-terrestrials, and human-fish hybrids. The series gained a small cult following because of its similarities to many infamous B-Movies, but ratings were not high enough to justify the continuation of the series.

The same season, the original Baywatch then in its seventh season referenced the same events from Nights in a tongue-in-cheek manner, with one episode showing Mitch stumbling through Baywatch headquarters, wearing bandages around his neck, implying that he was attacked by a vampire the night before.

In perhaps the most bizarre episode of the series, Mitch encountered two Vikings involved in a blood feud with each other , from the year AD, who had been thawed out after centuries in a deep freeze.

The episode showed that Mitch had an encyclopedic knowledge of Vikings, because he studied sea-faring people growing up.

He even told his friend Griff that if he had lived in those days, he would have been a Viking. After the two warriors fought to the death, Mitch gave them the closest thing he could to a proper Viking funeral, by sending them off the harbor in a wooden raft, and then shooting a flaming arrow at the raft, sinking it, giving them a funeral at sea.

After the cancellation of Baywatch Nights , Mitch continued on the original series, now promoted to Captain. Nights was once more alluded to in a tongue-in-cheek manner in the Season 8 episode, "Eel Nino," where an electric eel had been terrorizing beachgoers.

When some of the lifeguards not yet knowing it was an electric eel , speculated that it could be an alien, Mitch, annoyed, told them, "This is not the X-Files.

Mitch and Garner teamed up again on the original Baywatch series in season 8, where they had a temporary falling out when Garner used Mitch's new love interest, Neely Capshaw, as an undercover mole in a drug dealer's operation.

It was the last time Mitch and Garner appeared together in the series. The premiere episode of Baywatch: Hawaii showed a new and somewhat darker side to Mitch Buchannon.

Disillusioned by his failed relationships, his mother's losing battle with Alzheimer's disease, and the fact that his son Hobie had left home and gone off to college , Mitch decided to pack his bags and escape to Hawaii.

The opening scenes of the first episode seemed to show Mitch as a bit of a reclusive loner, staying on a secluded beach and trying to escape his life as an L.

County Lifeguard. However, when he saw a family of four drowning, he jumped in to save them, knowing he could save their lives, and that he could never escape his true calling.

In spite of the fact that he pulled all four family members out of the water, Mitch still felt a step too slow, and confessed to his friend, local lifeguard Leon 'Rock' Keaweamahi played by Vincent Klyn that he wished to establish a training center where lifeguards from diverse geographic locations could meet and discuss life-saving techniques.

Mitch then put together a group of 6 elite lifeguards from California, Australia, and the Hawaiian Islands, establishing them as his new team who worked at the training center.

It was hinted in the series that Mitch was still active in the Navy SEALS, and had been involved in various black ops through the years.

The continuity of these operations conflict with storylines seen in Baywatch and Baywatch Nights. At the end of the first season of Baywatch: Hawaii , David Hasselhoff chose to leave the role of Mitch.

While on the trail of eco-terrorists led by Mitch's former SEAL comrade gone rogue, Zach Martin, Mitch was caught in an underwater explosion and presumed dead, though his body was never found.

The series carried on for one more year without the character of Mitch, before ending in the spring of Serving as both a reunion episode and bookend to the Baywatch saga, Mitch, alive and well after being presumed dead in , was ready to marry a woman who resembled his late friend and lover, Stephanie Holden, before being forced to face his old enemy, Mason Sato, originally seen in Season 2.

The character of Mitch Buchannon was played by Dwayne Johnson in the film adaptation , with Hasselhoff making a cameo as Mitch's mentor also named Mitch Buchannon.
