The scraped colors result in flabbergasting textures and hues. This painting is third in a four-part series, created in It conjures the sense of desire, as these colors titillate our optical and tactile sensations and quell our hunger for pure pleasure.

The chromatic blend of blue, purple, orange, magenta and yellow, pink, and turquoise captivates the viewer immediately and reminds of the kaleidoscope.
The luminous hues almost look like Aurora Borealis shining above the red, orange, green, or violet planets. The unstable texture of saturated hues that blend and smear together in aggressively tainted combinations invites us to come closer and examine the painting as if a scientist would examine the sample of the new, fascinating discovery.
It inspires the viewers to find out what lies behind the layers of paint and to figure out what is the message conveyed behind this masterpiece.
Go ahead and find out more about the painting and the auction here. It is the final piece of the four-part series. The composition delivers a display of apparently endless iridescence and layered painterly procedure.
The breathtaking photo-painting masterpiece was at the time of creation the largest painting he has created.
Executed when Richter was thirty-six, the astonishing 9 by 9 feet piece marks it as a historic moment in his creative oeuvre. The juxtaposition of the Gothic Duomo and the neo-classical Galleria intelligently compares the difference between commerce and religion.
See more about it here. Number one on our list is the amazing Abstraktes bild from In the creation of this piece, Richter waged a war between the brush and the squeegee.
Horizontal bands and vertical drags of wide brushstrokes are interrupted by more angular accents, resulting in a mesmerizing ground in which painterly components simultaneously quarrel and complement each other.
Deepest blue and acidic yellow and red bestow upon the viewer illustrious light effects that edges on the experimental. The centrally places radiant green is punctured by a stream of bright color reminding one of sunlight shining through the soft flock of clouds.

Join today. During this period, Richter created paintings that were based on photographs he collected, such as Party and Women Descending the Staircase His collection of photographs would later develop into an archive of sorts that the artist called Atlas.
Like most of his photo-paintings, Party and Women Descending the Staircase have a photographic source that can be found in Atlas.
Towards the end of the s, Richter felt that he exhausted his photographic inspirations and began exploring an abstract style of painting.
Throughout the years, Richter periodically experimented with several kinds of abstraction: color chart paintings like colors , grey monochromes like Grey , and colorful, gestural abstracts like Abstract Painting No.
In the late s, Richter took on the controversial subject of the deaths of the leaders of the German terrorist group, Baader-Meinhof, in the series 18 Oktober The paintings were based on published photographs, to which he later applied different painterly effects that obscured the images, as in Funeral Richter never shied away from political subjects, although h e maintained that his paintings were not political statements.
In , Richter completed one of his most ambitious commissions, the Cologne Cathedral Window He based the design of the stained glass window on his color chart painting colors In , the 86 year old artist made headlines for donating 18 paintings to provide permanent accommodation for the homeless population in the German State of North Rhine-Westphali.
Richter has produced abstract as well as photorealistic paintings, and also photographs and glass pieces. Gerhard's mother, Hildegard Schönfelder, at the age of 25 gave birth to Gerhard.
Hildegard's father, Ernst Alfred Schönfelder, at one time was considered a gifted pianist. Ernst moved the family to Dresden after taking up the family enterprise of brewing and eventually went bankrupt.
Once in Dresden, Hildegard trained as a bookseller, and in doing so realized a passion for literature and music. Gerhard's father, Horst Richter, was a mathematics and physics student at the Technische Hochschule in Dresden.
The two were married in After struggling to maintain a position in the new Nationalist Socialist education system, Horst found a position in Reichenau.
In Reichenau, Gerhard's younger sister, Gisela was born in November Horst and Hildegard were able to remain primarily apolitical due to Reichenau's location in the countryside.
Horst, being a teacher, was eventually forced to join the National Socialist Party. He never became an avid supporter of Nazism, and was not required to attend party rallies.
In , Gerhard was conscripted into the Deutsches Jungvolk, but by the end of the war he was still too young to be an official member of the Hitler Youth.
In Hildegard moved the family to Waltersdorf, and was later forced to sell her piano. He left school after 10th grade and apprenticed as an advertising and stage-set painter, before studying at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts.
In , he finished higher professional school in Zittau, and, between and , successively worked as an apprentice with a sign painter and as a painter.
In , his application for study at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts was rejected as "too bourgeois". Richter may have layered his paint to achieve a perfect harmony in the drying rates of his paint.
There are few if any drying cracks in the upper surface of his painting, the type that can occur when a fast drying layer is laid on top of a slow drying layer.
The upper layer dries fast creating a hard skin whilst the underlying slow drying layer is still fluid and moving. The upper layer cannot accommodate this movement and splits open, often revealing the underlying layer and creating disturbing and contra-compositional features.
This problem does not arise in these paintings despite their multi-layer paint structure. Richter has a thorough technical understanding of his materials.
It is one of a series made on a different support - not canvas. This material has been widely used by artists as it provides a light, flat and rigid support that has little aesthetic or visual impact on a painting.
Richter has applied his paint in a similar manner as before, manipulating the paint with a squeegee when the paint is very newly applied, hence its fluid character.
Richter does not maintain a horizontal direction as he glides his squeegee across the surface, rather he plays with it.
The squeegee is moved up and down in rapid movements to create the rippled effect seen on the left side. Once the paint has dried Richter has taken a sharp wide-head palette knife and gouged and scraped features out of the paint layer, exposing the paint-stained white preparatory layer beneath.
The technique creates a hallucinatory effect are the shapes portals or are they solid elements floating in a multi-dimensional composition?
MARK: Richter often seems to scrape the surface of an abstract painting with a knife, or the wrong-end of the brush, but occasionally he also takes a knife and cuts into the top layer of paint, and then peels off some of the top skin of the painting.
We see this clearly in Abstract Painting CR where there are several peeled-away sections. I can see how you are reminded of the Pollock painting but to me they are so different.
In Out of the Web there is a more gentle relationship between the peeled off elements and the dripped and splashed surrounding paint.
The overall effect is compositional harmony. In Abstract Painting CR the shapes are contra-compositional, they stand out and demand attention.
The main body of composition, as with the other Richter works, is made using the squeegee technique. Again the effect of peeling off or gouging out shapes in this fluid multilayer flat bed of paint creates a multi-dimensional composition.
The surface appears to move at rapid speed right to left, perhaps in the direction of the squeegee application.
The effect of these rough-edged and deeply gouged shapes, comprising the exposed dark blue and red paint of under-layers, make them static independent elements against the backdrop of a storm of rapidly moving red paint.
To me, Richter has achieved in paint an effect similar to what sophisticated special effects achieve in film.
