Many of these individuals were veteran performers from Western-themed films and television programmes, which meant that characters like Friar Tuck and the Sheriff of Nottingham have distinctly American accents and mannerisms.
This effect was further reinforced by the choice of country singer Roger Miller as the film's songwriter and narrator.
It's one of the few animation films that always reminds me of when I was a young and brings back a flood of memories every time I watch it.
Sometimes nostalgia is just too strong to ignore. It doesn't compare to the grandiosity of Disney's run of popular films in the '90s, and it doesn't quite measure up to the stalwart classics of the '50s and '60s.
It is, however, a story that ages well, has some memorable songs, and some entertaining action scenes. Robin Hood [Brian Bedford] is a fox.
Their sworn enemy is the cowardly lion Prince John [Peter Ustinov]. Like the many tales of Robin Hood that have come to fruition over the years, Walt Disney's always sticks to the basics.
Robin and Little John steal from the rich and give to the poor. They do so with more cartoony antics, but the principle is the same. There isn't any one thing about it that made me love it.
Instead there are a variety of aspects I admire about the movie. I remember thinking that it was one of the most exciting Disney animation films I'd ever seen.
Archery contests chase scenes, and sword fights in burning castles. It was indeed a harrowing experience for a youngster. That's one of the reasons that it just got a simple 40th Anniversary Edition release instead of a Diamond Edition.
Still, it will always remain one of my personal favourites even if just for nostalgia's sake. The animation has a sketchy feel to it, which is stark in contrast to Walt Disney's later films which are pristinely animated.
As the film opens you'll notice that the opening credits appear to have needed a bit more work. There's some colour fluctuation here and there, colour fills become unstable as the characters run across the screen.
The entire opening sequence has an overall gauzy appearance. Once the animation film starts, however, all worry subsides.
Colour starts to stabilise and only wavering slightly on occasion. The movie's line art is splendidly captured. At times it might appear "messy" as lines appear and disappear as the animation film moves along, because these give the illusion of specks or flecks that some might think should've been cleaned up, but that's the nature of the animation itself.
The rougher part of the animation film gives it the life of its own. Colours are strong and vibrant. Banding is nowhere to be found.
As for errant noise, I didn't really notice any that isn't supposed to be there. Disney has done an admirable job in getting this ready for an HD presentation.
Sure, a Diamond Edition may have brought out just a tad more beauty, but for what we have here I'm not complaining.
While satisfying, it does sound a bit hollow at times. With the surround sound aspect of the mix suffering slightly. Most of the animation film dialogue is focused up front and centre.
Some cheering and other action is captured in the rear speakers, but it's never really impressive.
The best surround sound can be had during the archery tournament and the subsequent chase. Dialogue is clear. I didn't detect any anomalies such as hissing or static.
The track sounded clear, free from any sort of troubles that may befall films of this age. The film songs have a great stage to perform.

Director: Bert Gillett. It still has a home in mine. But it's possible to enjoy a trip down nostalgia lane without getting lost along the way. The animation film doesn't hold up next to other Walt Disney classics, and feels more lightweight and aimless than an animated adaptation of the Hood mythos should.
Oh, there's still plenty of fun to be had, sure. Just none that grabs hold of the imagination or lingers long after the credits roll. Disney's Blu-ray release is better than ever, with a very commendably re-mastered video presentation and a solid 5.
It may not be among the best of the studio's animated features, but that doesn't mean it deserves to be forgotten. Highly Recommended! Andrew C.
If you want to buy this it is probably because you remember the movie from childhood and want to share it with your grandkids. I was skeptical about getting a good quality copy for this price as I have experienced bad copies of animated movies in the past.
Clear and crisp with good sound also. Don't know yet if the grandkids will like the movie but I sure have already. One person found this helpful.
Went ahead with the blu-ray on this one, but I don't think it was necessary. Classic Disney movie about a fox, Robin Hood and Keeps the attention of the kids and made them laugh.
Very nostalgic for me as this was one of my childhood favorites! I'd wanted to share with my young kids and have them enjoy it too.
Some reviewers have discussed the aspect ratio for viewing such as v widescreen and so forth. This isn't a brand new movie and I don't think most viewers expect to see a spectacle of engineering here The songs are great, the characters are funny and the kids enjoyed it.
That's all I needed! Out of the three new to Blu releases this week, Robin Hood takes the cake! Beautiful picture, absolutely stunning at times with a fair amount of depth and clean, crisp characters and backgrounds.
The opening credits gave me pause as there is a hefty amount of softness in the imagery, but it clears up soon enough. The sound package is robust and filling.
All in all, a solid release for a an absolutely charming 70s Disney film! A must buy! I remember seeing this film back when I was in elementary school, long ago.
My two daughters are now in first and third grade, and it was fun to introduce the movie to them as well. It's a timeless tale, and this version holds up pretty well forty years on.
My favorite characters are the rhinos guarding the royal procession. It's a fun story, and it was fun to watch it again.

Fast delivery and perfect quality. This movie is delicious. It may have been done way back in , but I can guarantee that you will love this movie as much as you love the recent ones.
It's all about some of the characters. My personal favorite is Prince John and, of course, Sir Hiss. Sir Hiss is Prince John's personal "assistant".
He is a snake that keeps tickling Prince John's ears. I cannot forget to mention a couple of characters that are brilliant, like the little bunny Skipper.
You'll see what I mean when you watch the movie. You will want to grab that bunny! Love it. I love this cover.
When my daughter unwrapped this and pulled the sleve off I was surprised to see the original picture on the main case. Best of both worlds in my opion.
