I saw it. It was quite enjoyable. Was it perfect? It's no "Conjuring 2". Taissa Farmiga has a lot of growing up as an actress to do, sure.

But, it was FAR from 'terrible'. It certainly wasn't 'disappointing'. All my fears about it were without merit. I don't know what the reason s were for the smear campaign, but it certainly got one, and it certainly affected its performance, given how even large fans like myself didn't go to the theater to see it.

That said, the story is a good one, and the tie-ins to the Conjuring franchise are done with grace and dignity.

Some of the CGI isn't that great, sure. Someone needs to come clean on why this movie got treated so poorly, even before its release when no one even knew what was going to be in it.

It affected a global market and probably cost the director future work to some degree. If you're a fan of "nunsploitation", "The Conjuring Universe", possession films, or just good old occult horror in general, then ignore all the negativity and see this movie.

It is a labor of love that deserves better than what it got. Left wanting. Loved The Conjuring. It had everything this movie lacked: good writing, stellar acting, and zero predictability.

I was super excited to see The Nun, and as an absolute fan of supernatural horror, those especially with demonic possession and Catholicism, I had such high hopes.

This film lacked the necessary fleshed out story line, was far too heavy on the contrived cheap thrills, and left much to be desired.

Taissa is great, and I love her in AHS, but in this, her ability to breathe any sort of life into this drivel was cut off at the knees.

Bummer, really wanted to like this. Gave it two stars becuase it's not the actors fault the script blew, and also, some of the scenery as well as the abbey looked decent.

Other reviews are all over the place with this movie. Go into it with an expectation of just being entertained and you will be.

Smarter than you might think and some real chilling parts! Most movies of this genre are contrived and silly, this one is not. I thought this was a great movie.

The story was interesting, and it had plenty of scary moments. I didn't watch the previews, so those who say they saw all of the scary parts in the preview and it ruined it for them- didn't apply to me.

I also really like the actress that plays the nun she's on American Horror Story so when I saw she was in it I assumed it would be good :.

Of all the Conjuring and Annabella movies this doesn't even come close to comparing. I was very disappointed.

Poor story development and characters. I wish I had read the reviews before paying to watch this!!! Whereas The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 rely on a great story to build suspense with spookie pays offs to keep you entertained, this film uses loud noises and over the top monsters for lack of a better term and is very hard to follow.

Can't believe I bought this movie. But hey there's a zombie in it so I gave 2 stars. There's a scene in the graveyard when you think you are watching the walking dead for a second!

It's just jump scares and dumb people going places they shouldn't. Spoiler Alert. I left that headline because answers still need to be answered.

I mean there is supposed to be a path through all of these movies and how they mesh with each other invariant ways and means but the red herrings are still being passed along and the questions still remain unanswered.

Am I the only one who noticed that the nun, supposedly who had stayed at the same convent, in Annabelle 2 had a baby blanket?

And will this question ever be answered? Didn't she say that she stayed at that convent? Hopefully, they'll put all the questions left unanswered in ONE movie so the rest of the fans of this genre universe can sleep peacefully at night!?!

But as far as The Nun goes, it was average. Annabelle 2 was much scarier. They had the upside down cross can't forget that cheap gag and also they play upon universal fears, for instance, being buried alive, shadowy movements, and a lot of nuns running around all dressed in black.

There are three things I am uncomfortable around: clowns, ventriloquists' dummies, and nuns. I don't understand why the nuns didn't order from the Montgomery Wards catalog and get about yardsticks and rulers.

If memory serves me, they are very adept with those weapons of choice. All in all, I gave it 3 stars because it tempted me to go back and rewatch the "series" over again.

And why is it that the Warrens are portrayed as a dashingly good looking couple. I mean have you seen what the real Warrens look like, pans like that could scare the wits out of anything.

You know, double-bagger wedding. Facts are facts. Why can't these spiritualists be good looking in reality?

I also thought that demons and the like can't travel over water, so how the heck did "Frenchie" get back to Canada?

Just so he, or rather the demon, could meet up with the Warrens? Please, will someone tie up all the loose ends before the director, writers, actors, and crew start tripping over themselves and suffer an accident?

Was it worth the 6 bucks I paid for it? I have 48 hrs, so I think I shall watch it again. Another review, probably not.

Unless I missed something. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Hardy had signed on to direct The Nun with a new screenplay from Wan and Dauberman.

Principal photography began in May in Bucharest , Romania , and during filming, the set was blessed by a Roman Catholic clergyman. Critics praised its performances and atmosphere but criticized its weak narrative and over-reliance on jump-scares.

In Romania , two nuns living at the Saint Cartha's monastery are attacked by an unseen evil force after entering a tunnel to retrieve an ancient Christian relic.

The surviving nun, Sister Victoria, flees from the attacker, a demon appearing as a nun, and hangs herself. Her body is discovered by Frenchie, a villager who transports supplies to the nuns.

The Vatican learns of the incident and summons Father Burke to Rome, where they ask him to travel with Sister Irene, a nun in her novitiate , to Romania in order to investigate the situation.

While Sister Irene is teaching children the relationship between religion and science in a school, her Mother Superior interrupts her and informs her that Burke has arrived in order to request Irene's accompaniment in his trip to Romania.

The pair travels to Romania and meets with Frenchie, who leads them to the abbey. They discover Victoria's body and take a key from her corpse.

Inside, they encounter the Abbess , who informs them that the nuns observe a period of silence during the night and offers them lodging at the attached convent if they wish to return tomorrow.

Frenchie is attacked by a demon as he returns to the village, but escapes. Burke tells Irene that a boy he exorcised in the past, Daniel, was fatally injured during the ritual, and Burke has carried the burden of the boy's death with him ever since.

Irene reveals that as a girl, she had visions and each of them concluded with "Mary points the way", causing the Church to take an interest in her.

That night, Burke is rescued by Irene after being buried alive in the graveyard by the demonic entity.

The next day, Irene and Burke return to the abbey, but only Irene can enter as it is cloistered. She meets some of the other nuns and learns that they are praying constantly, swapping in shifts, to keep the evil entity at bay.

Sister Oana reveals the abbey's history: it was built in the Middle Ages as a castle by a duke obsessed with the occult.

The duke summoned the demon through a rift in the catacombs but was killed by Christian knights, who sealed the rift with a vial filled with the Blood of Christ.

However, the bombings during World War II accidentally reopened the rift, unleashing the evil entity once more.

Burke identifies the demon as Valak and discovers the Abbess has been dead all along. Frenchie heads back to the abbey to help Irene and Burke.

Irene is attacked by Valak and joins the nuns in desperate prayer to ward off the demon. When the group reunites, Irene discovers that none of the nuns she had seen and talked to were real and she had been praying alone, later realizing that Victoria had been the last nun in the abbey and had sacrificed herself to stop Valak from possessing her body and unleashing evil.

Theorizing that Valak can only be stopped if they seal the rift with the blood of Christ contained in the reliquary, the trio retrieves the vial with the key Victoria possessed.

Irene then informs Burke that God has called her to make her solemn vows as a nun and asks Burke to elevate her to the status of a professed nun, which he does in the abbey's chapel.

After the trio unlocks the tunnel door, Irene is lured into a pentagram and possessed by Valak. Frenchie smears some of the blood of Christ on her face, casting out the demon.

Burke is wounded by Daniel's ghost as Valak starts to drown Irene in a flooded chamber. Irene expels the blood of Christ in the demon's face, banishing it as the blood of Christ seals the rift.

After Frenchie resuscitates Irene, he reveals his real name is Maurice. Unbeknownst to the others, Maurice has been possessed by Valak, as evidenced by an inverted cross on his neck.

Twenty years later at a university seminar, in Wakefield, Massachusetts, Carolyn Perron watches as Ed and Lorraine Warren present footage of their attempt to exorcise a possessed Maurice.

In the footage, Maurice grabs Lorraine, giving her visions of Ed dying, which initiates the Warrens' investigation of the Perron farmhouse haunting.

We have it in chronological order, so we can keep track of where it all happens. Principal photography for the film began on May 3, , at Castel Film Studios in Bucharest , Romania, with Maxime Alexandre serving as cinematographer.

The Nun reportedly went under extensive reshoots. On June 13, , a teaser trailer was released. The site's critical consensus reads, " The Nun boasts strong performances, spooky atmospherics, and a couple decent set-pieces, but its sins include inconsistent logic and narrative slackness.

The Plugged In review for the film summarized the spirituality evident in the film: "Evil is real, the movie tells us, but so is God.

Spiritual trappings are everywhere. And when in doubt or danger, you can't go wrong with a little prayer.

Rose Pacatte , a nun belonging to the Daughters of St. Paul , stated "that there are two Catholic theological aspects of this film that are accurate: one is that the devil exists, and the other is that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, will show us the way.

In August , Wan discussed the possibility of a Nun sequel and what its storyline might entail: "I do know where potentially, if The Nun works out, where The Nun 2 could lead to and how that ties back to Lorraine's story that we've set up with the first two Conjuring s and make it all come full circle.

In April , it was announced by Peter Safran that a sequel was in development. He stated there was a "really fun" storyline planned for the film, [40] and commented that there was an "inevitability to another The Nun movie".

I have no idea where all the negativity comes from Verified Purchase. I had high hopes for this movie as a LARGE fan of the Conjuring Universe; however, before it was even released this movie was getting negative reviews and negative talk all over the net.

Of course that only got worse upon its release. I never even saw it in the theater even though I had been following its development and couldn't wait to go, but all the negativity had turned me off.

I didn't want to be disappointed. So, I waited. Waited until it was available to rent. I saw it. It was quite enjoyable.
